Search Engine Optimization – SEO. It is the new style of writing for the web, be it for the Blogosphere or traditional websites that attract the Major Search Engines to your pages.
First up it is important that when selecting a name for your site, to have as descriptive a domain name as possible. You may have always wanted to see your name in lights, but johndoe.com does not help a Search Engine bring clients to a site that sells vitamins, whereas thebestonlinevitaminsource.com certainly does!
Beside for descriptive domain names, there are two critical areas or techniques of SEO as it relates to your website, META tags and Keywords.
META tags are imbedded within the title of your website pages. The META tags should match the content of your page or you gain no benefit from them. Meta tags are HTML codes placed at the top of a web page that are like a mini synopsis of the content and keywords and phrases relevant to that page.
When typing in a search phrase into a Search Engine the search parameters are first matched to the titles of pages, therefore it is critically important that the most relevant key phrases relating to your site are in your title if you want to be found and highly ranked by the Search Engines.
The title of a given page will also be what is displayed as the result by the search engine so this is where being a wordsmith comes in handy, a catchy turn of a phrase that is informational or that a searcher will find appealing, is beneficial, but keep in mind your title phrases must first be appealing to the search engines, if you want anyone to see them.
Search Engine Robots do not search for your Webpages the way people do, they search for words and phrases in the HTML code on a page, and that is why it is as critical that you have the right phrases in the title code, as you do in the other content on the page.
Now onto that other content, this is where Keywords and Keyword density come in when writing the actual content on the pages or in articles on the pages.
Keywords in this case are the one or two words that people are most likely to use when using Google, or some other Search Engine when looking for something on the ‘net.
So you must think about what these two words would be; such as “herbal supplements” or “low cost medical insurance” or “affordable vacations” and then use those words at least two or three times in each paragraph on a given page.
Now you do not have to guess at what the best keywords are for your site there are tools available such as http://www.wordtracker.com that can help you to determine the best Keywords for your site.
If you use a tool like this and get a list of valuable keywords for your site, do not try to use the entire list on a given page, stretch it out, and only concentrate on a phrase or two for any one given page, and Optimize that page for only those keywords.
